Start with the three pedals
In a conventional manual car, the pedals are arranged left to right: clutch, brake, accelerator. Study their purposes as well as their positions.
- Clutch
- Disconnects engine drive from the gearbox when pressed, allowing gear changes. Operate it with your left foot. An automatic car does not have a driver-operated clutch pedal.
- Service brake
- Slows or stops the moving vehicle. Operate the brake pedal with your right foot.
- Accelerator
- Controls engine power. Operate it with your right foot. Do not confuse it with the brake simply because both use the same foot.
Memory check: cover the list and name the pedal you would use to slow down.
Connect the other controls to a task
- Steering wheel
- Changes the vehicle’s direction.
- Gear lever
- Selects the gear. Learn the role of the lever rather than memorising one car’s gear pattern.
- Parking brake
- Keeps a stationary vehicle from moving. Distinguish this from the service brake used to slow down.
- Indicators
- Communicate an intended change of direction. A signal does not give you priority.
- Mirrors
- Help you observe behind and alongside the vehicle. They do not show every blind spot.
- Speedometer
- Shows road speed. An odometer records distance travelled.
- Wipers
- Clear the windscreen so you can see ahead.
Practise purpose before position
Try two passes through an illustration. First, name each control while its labels are visible. Next, cover the labels and describe its purpose aloud. If you can name a control but cannot explain what it does, make that your next revision point.
Switch the direction of the exercise too: start with a task such as “keep the parked car stationary” and name the relevant control. This helps you recognise the same concept when a question is worded differently.
Quick check: service brake or parking brake?
To slow a moving vehicle, use the service brake. To hold a stationary vehicle, use the parking brake. Similar names do not make them interchangeable.
